It doesn’t matter what you do, what type of business you own or who your clients are. There are some formulas for success, which are universal. Let’s focus on 3 ideas of success, which caught my attention.

1. Success= Work hard + Play Hard + Keep your mouth shut.

Albert Einstein won’t cease to surprise me. To Einstein the key to success is working hard, playing hard and good listening skills. Sounds about right. Owning a fitness club is all about hard work. Being a gym owner or manager means very flexible working hours, availability at any times and little sleep. On the other side, you have a dream job: you can spend your time in a office full of modern sports equipment, positive and fit people and in a healthy environment. However all this hard work will only pay off if you know how to listen to your members and their dynamically changing needs. But that’s even sometimes not enough. Listening is one thing, however you must have partners who are ready to adapt your system to fit the new requirements, this means that your software provide should be open to custom development.

2. Failure = key to success.

The great Michael Jordan described his key to success being failure. Remember how we talked about 6 signs that your club needs change? One of the signs was the poor leadership of gym owners. Failure and failing can be exciting, once you are ready to admit, that you can do much better. Being stuck in a illusion of success, simply because we don’t want to admit failure, will never bring us far. There is something exhilarating in hitting rock bottom - anything is possible. At this point you should question all your choices and perform a total strategy revision. Focus on key points: what are your members needs? What failed so far? How can you use your assets and software to best fit their requirements, cut costs and optimise processes?

3. Formula for failure: try to please everybody.

Herbert Bayard Swope didn’t present a success formula, however he highlighted the importance of failure, which seems to be crucial for success. Pleasing everybody never works. We are too different. Some strategies will work on particular people, some won’t. This is why you should use a software which enables you to group and tag your members from the very beginning. This way, you can adress different personas in your club in a very targeted manner. As a result, you will please everybody but in a different way.

Don’t try to create new theories. It’s probably been said already by someone someday. What is important is to find your own formula for success and cooperate with partners, who understand your goals.
